On Saturday, 22 November 2025, the inaugural Salmo Horizon Cup unfolded on the waters of Klipvoor Dam, nestled within the scenic Borakalalo National Park. What began as a bold new addition to the competitive calendar quickly established itself as a serious contender on the South African Artlure angling stage.
From the outset, this was never going to be an ordinary competition.
A Rare Opportunity
Klipvoor Dam is widely regarded as one of the province’s most beautiful and ecologically protected fisheries. Boating is typically prohibited to the general public, making the venue both exclusive and largely untouched from a competitive perspective. Through the support and cooperation of Eco-Care Trust, special permission was granted for the Salmo Horizon Cup — a privilege that added to the significance of the occasion.
In the weeks leading up to the event, the dam level rose by nearly 30%. While welcomed from an environmental standpoint, the sudden increase presented anglers with a serious tactical challenge. Freshly flooded banks, submerged structure, and altered feeding patterns meant fish were scattered and unpredictable. Success would depend not only on skill, but on adaptability and decision-making under pressure.
Fishing Under Pressure
Despite the demanding conditions, quality fish were brought to hand throughout the day. Barbel, Carp, and Makriel featured prominently in the catches, rewarding anglers who managed to locate active pockets of fish and adjust their approaches accordingly.
Rising water typically pushes fish into newly inundated areas, where natural food sources become available. However, this often results in vast feeding zones, making it difficult to pinpoint concentrations. Teams had to cover water methodically, balance risk with reward, and trust their instincts.

With more than R15 000 in prizes at stake, the intensity on the water was evident from launch to final whistle. Every fish mattered, and consistency across species proved decisive.
